  1. Here we calculate the entropy of the normal distribution and show that the normal distribution has maximal entropy amongst all distributions with a given finite variance.

  2. Shannon makes this claim in his 1948 paper and lists this property as one of his justifications for the definition of entropy.

  3. Here we consider the problem of approximately factorising a matrix $X$ without constraints and show that solutions can be generated from the orthonormal eigenvectors of the Gram matrix $X^T X$ (i.e. of the sample covariance matrix).

  4. Projected Gradient Descent

Below is a re-digestion of Walton’s one-pager on projected gradient descent, in which I have corrected some inconsequential mistakes of his and doubtless introduced more serious ones of my own.

  5. See also Estimator theory and the bias-variance trade-off.

  6. Below is a (rough!)

  7. We show that a real, symmetric matrix has basis of real-valued orthonormal eigenvectors and that the corresponding eigenvalues are real.

  8. An overview of word2vec

Below are the slides from my talk at the Berlin Machine Learning Meetup group on July 8, 2014, giving an overview of word2vec, covering the CBOW learning task, hierarchical softmax and negative sampling.

  9. In response to my own question at Cross Validated.
